Extracting Salvinorin from Salvia DivinorumQuantities are all relative (1000=100=10)
Acetone is extremely flammable, please be careful.

4000ml of Food Grade/Distilled acetone
1000 grams of powdered S. divinorum leaf
100 grams of finely crushed leaf soaked in hot water for 30 minutes and dried
1 large cookie jar (preferably 2 gallons)
1 large glass bowl (preferably 2 gallons)
2 smaller glass bowls (that will fit inside a CrockPot)
1 Double Mesh Strainer
Speed Drier (Brushless computer fan attached to strainer)

1. 333 grams of powdered dry leaf would be placed in a bowl and pressed down as flat as possible. The more powdered the leaf, the less acetone would be needed.

2. 3000ml of acetone would be poured onto the leaf, and the powdered leaf would be soaked for 5 minutes, stirred enough so that the acetone worked its way through all the leaf.  (It has been reported that a 6 liter KitchenAid Mixer worked incredibly well for this.)

3. The acetone would be poured out into a large glass bowl, strained it through a double mesh filter.

4. Steps 1-3 would be repeated for the other two portions of leaf, using the extra 1000ml of acetone as necessary.

5. The acetone would need to settle in the dark overnight, in complete darkness. There would be sediment on the bottom, so the acetone would be carefully poured into the 2 bowls, with as much of the sediment left behind behind as possible. (Acetone will hold about 23 mg of Salvinorin-A per ml of fluid, so none of it would drop to the bottom with the sediment.)

NOTE: Some acetone would be left in the bowl, but the bowl would be tilted on its side, to allow the sediment to re-settle.  Once it re-settled, the rest of the acetone would be lifted off with an eyedropper.

6. Once decanted, one glass bowl would be set in a DRY Crock Pot set to LOW (114 degrees Fahrenheit), with the Speed Drier on top.

7. Once this bowl is almost evaporated, the liquid from the second bowl would be poured in, and evaporation would continue.

There are now multiple options on how to proceed:

I. Making Enhanced Leaf

1.  When there is about 1000 ml of liquid left, the 100 grams (for 10x) of finely crushed S. divinorum leaf would be added to the acetone extract.

2. It would then have to evaporate completely down, mixed very well and often so that it would blend evenly as the volume of acetone evaporated down to just wet leaf. If there was some green film on the sides of the bowl, the acetone would be gently swished around the sides to re-dissolve it.

3. The enhanced leaf would be laid out in several large shallow pans for at least a day to ensure that the Acetone had completely dissolved.  If there is even the slightest scent of ANY acetone whatsoever, it wouldn’t be free of harmful chemicals yet.

II. Making Pure Salvinorin

99.9% Isopropyl Alcohol.
Eye Dropper
Shot Glass or small beaker
Small Bowl with Airtight Top
Teaspoon

1. The acetone would be evaporated down until the material turned into a thick paste.

2. It would be scraped into a 100ml beaker with enough ISP added to the material to bring it up to 100ml.  It would be stirred VERY well.

3. It would then sit for 2 hours, to separate the alcohol from the barely visible layer of salvinorin at the bottom of the shot glass or beaker. In a graduated beaker, the salvinorin would come up to about the 60ml mark, so ISP can be lifted off down to 65ml easily and safely.

4. The top 20ml layer of green liquid would be lifted off with an eyedropper, and deposited into a small, sealable bowl or bottle. (This would be saved for recovery or for re-extracting after multiple washes have been saved.)  20ml of ISP would be poured into the shot glass again, stirred well, and left to settle for an hour or so, and then the top layer would be lifted off with an eyedropper again.

5. This would be repeated until the salvinorin was turning a light green on the bottom layer. This would take several small washes.

6. Once the layer formed clearly, it could be re-heated in a CrockPot to make it into a flatter, greenish layer.  This would thicken it up and bring the black wax to to the top of the layer of salvinorin.

6. The green wax would be scraped off the sides and discarded, a small amount of alcohol would be dissolved onto the top layer, it would be left to sit to turn dark green, and then eyedropped off.

NOTE: The salvinorin would look MUCH GREENER when it was wet, so there would be no need to try too hard to get the salvinorin to turn a white color!

7. This paste would then be heated on low in a bowl in a CrockPot until dry. It would be a solid material, but if scraped with a spoon, it would turn into a fluffy white powder.  This isn’t pure salvinorin, but is very close.  This would yield about 2,500mg of salvinorin.

Further Purifiying

1. The 2,500mg of salvinorin would be dissolved into about 100ml of acetone in a TALL and THIN beaker, and put into darkness for 6 hours.

2. After 6 hours, the acetone would be decanted off, and the sediment on the bottom would be discarded.

3. This would be placed into the CrockPot with the Speed Drier, and when there was about 50ml of acetone left, 50ml of ISP would be added.

4. There would be material on the bottom and a chalky white substance along the side of the beaker…the white chalky stuff is reportedly salt deposits and impurities, with some salvinorin.  (It would contain small amounts of salvinorin, but purity was the goal.)  The chalky substance would be taken off with a Q-tip and discarded.

5. Equal parts of acetone and ISP would be added again and placed in Speed Drier again.  If it is pure, the material would expand into a white, cake-like substance as it dries, looking like small pieces of dried white bread. This is pure salvinorin-a.

Simplified, Automatic ISP Extraction

METHOD ONE: Through far less efficient, ISP could be used instead of acetone in exactly the same way. Once the extraction was complete, the extract would be heated to 86 degrees Celcius or 186 degrees Fahrenheit and boiled until there was only a small amount of ISP left. This would then be quickly cooled, and the salvinorin would precipitate to the bottom of the container.  If this process were started with already dried extract, 100 ml if ISP would be used for every 30 mg of salvinorin resin/powder.

METHOD TWO: The salvinorin could be put into ISP and set in darkness for several weeks to a month and the salvinorin would form crystals and precipitate to the bottom of the container.

Making Tincture from Pure Salvinorin

Everclear can hold about 1.5mg of salvinorin per ml.  This means that every ounce of tincture (28ml) would hold about 42mg of salvinorin.  Plant material reportedly helps carry salvinorin into mucous membranes, so 5 dropperfuls of “Herb Pharm Peppermint Spirits” and one teabag of “Tazo: Refresh” for every ounce would make for a pleasant tincture, with the essential mint oils and plant material necessary.
